Once Again in Traffic-king
Janet Kuypers
5/11/25
Driving north in Texas from South Padre Island
(And never leaving the United States), after
Ninety miles of driving, we stopped at a Port of
Entry. As we get to the front of the line and see
Drug dogs, we roll down our window — as I
Look as cheery and as Caucasian as I can.
“Are you citizens?” The man asks, “Yes sir,” we
Dutifully answer. Then, “Have a nice day and
Enjoy your stay,” is what we hear pulling away.
We roll up the windows and look at each other
Before he says to me, ‘Welcome to America.’
‘But we never left,’ I say as we realize that
Well inside the border is a good place to
Search for illegal immigrants and human
Trafficking. And not ninety seconds later we
Saw a cop pulling over a big truck. Probably
No drugs, no illegals, no selling little girls.
Probably just speeding — only ninety seconds
Away from the border patrol station. Some
People never learn. Maybe two minutes
Later, a train rolls by, adorned with its usual
Graffiti, of course, but one train car had
Painted a U.S. flag on it, like it was rippling.
‘Welcome to America’ indeed.
