Taxco

Jen McCartin

From my bed,
a rectangular frame displays
triangular steeples,
blue & purple lights skip
on tiny strings bought in squares
from peddlers – it’s Christmas,
peddlers work overtime.
Taxco -
a moonless night sky, ablaze
flipped over & tossed
onto a mountain.
At sunrise
skinny cats
chase skinny cats
and stray dogs fuck.
I said I’d come back
whenever you call but.
Sunrise casts a blue hue
as dawn breaks
a bruise on new skin.
The too-big bed I dreamt in -
I was someplace else
where glass pillars
stretch sunward,
children kick balls over dirty syringes,
the sea is a mirror
catching the sun,
even the rain glows
dropping on tents & cardboard houses.
I dreamt of home.
I woke up in Taxco,
so many white and pink
boxes dotted with tiny arches.
Two rooftops down the hill
stray dogs, spent & still as death,
don’t notice it’s morning.
Sound starts a hum,
grows into a philharmonic
of metal striking metal,
men whistle, men shout
and the walls define themselves -
monoliths guarding the land.
You sleep in your own bed
and from the balcony
I watch day crack
open an amphitheater,
pink and white.
