Good Morning

Michael H. Brownstein

a black crust of snow
does not melt into crystal ice,
but mud and hard candy--
the grass damp with parvo,
disfigured with sludge.

this morning I entered
the world of blue with nothing,
no dreams of the living,
no keep sakes of the dead--
into the gray white of snow

you think this is a poem of depression,
the blues of no light and winter,
a storm of mold and disinterest--
but a songbird sings from her nest
and a cardinal flashes red.

The wind lifts nothing of matter,
the brown crusts of crap melt,
all around, people say hi to one another,
how are you and I am fine
and all of this is true.

Some mornings the world is a piss storm,
others feces litter the way to wanderings,
and still others are vacant spaces
without sound or smell until the squirrel
runs from her nest to another full of glee.
