At the Philadelphia Dermatological Society Meeting, April 21, 2017

Kelley Jean White

Now we sip Perrier and nibble
meringues, samosas, sushi and small cakes.
We have a diversity thing going:
that is, the doctors are mostly white, though
a surprising number are Asian—makes
the small handful of black professionals

nearly invisible in the back dark
rows of the amphitheater. The patients
on display are black and brown. They’re numbered,
dressed in Johnnies; some are unencumbered
by any clothes at all. Some are infants,
their deformities seem worst, they’ve embarked

on lives of pain—ichthyosis, lichen
sclerosis, PHACES syndrome, harlequin.
We are all eager for the cocktail hour this evening
and tomorrow’s buffet sponsored by
our pharmaceutical company friends.
