Inertia

Sterling Warner

I felt like a wind-blown apple
bruised, imperfect, beyond desire
most eager, waiting ready for kind
hands to touch—cherish me
for deformities—impressed by my
figure covered head to toe in Egyptian
tattoos and Heidelberg scars.

Brushed aside like dust balls swept
under my bed every morning and night,
I hummed songs of sadness, each refrain
denoting possibilities; mystical melodies
encouraged dancing off beat to voodoo rhythms
finding a center among half-filled crates
of fruit fallen, Dionysian fellowship assured.
