when i was happy

when i think of beetlejuice
i’m still a little girl,
don’t have to share my mother
with anyone else;
and we’re having our indoor
picnics on the floor
with blankets and pepperoni rolls—
i am happy,
and there are no shadows
on my countenance;
i am just a content little girl
dreaming of worlds
far from any she’s known on earth—
i am my mother’s
“grossest with the mostest” and i am happy
to be compared with lydia
because she is magical and powerful and beautiful
everything i always wanted to be,
and everyone always called me mermaid;
but i was more than just those shiny scales and gills
i was a girl who knew there was beauty in
everything even in the places
people didn’t think to look.
