ever brief

in the woods i made a circle
full of sticks and fallen branches

wanted it to be a magic place where
the deer would greet me,
it was one of those childhood unlikely dreams;

but i have always known mysterious
truths sometimes become reality

i knew the power of dreams, magic, and miracles
and i believed them all and perhaps i hoped
beyond hope to prove my stepfather wrong because
he was always dismissive of me and all the things i felt—

no deer ever visited my friendship circle,
but we looked into one anothers eyes in the field by
the woods before and we kept eye contact before their
white tails disappeared into the dreams;

and that was a kind of friendship
ever brief.
