Collapsing Sand

Christopher Hivner

At the water’s edge
I needed to make a choice,
step into the surf
or backtrack to everything
I’d just left.
I stood under a morning sun,
indecision in my gut
like a virus,
forward or back,
go somewhere, do something,
but I just stood
like a deeply-rooted tree
until the water came to meet me
and lap at my feet,
licking my wounds
with an old hound dog’s tongue.
My feet sank
in the collapsing sand,
the weight of my weakness
pushing me deeper.
The water is at my ankles now,
cold kisses on dry skin.
The time to choose
has passed
and yet I still
don’t move,
can’t find my balance
in this world.
Time drifts away
with the dunes
leaving me behind
at the water’s edge.
