My Lebanese Friend

Everyone should have one.
A friend who values honesty,
Promises, vows, bonds, and oaths
Above all else – point, counterpoint.
A friend who says things you don’t
Want to hear, alienates your other friends,
Gets detained at Customs
Even though he’s American.

He is used to talking himself out of trouble.
Like an ancient Phoenician explorer,
Willing to assimilate but changing everything
Just by the way his accent sounds.
He has learned to control his temper.
He speaks English like a librarian.
Truth replaces beauty and everyone knows
Exactly how everyone else feels.

Spending time with him passes like the end
Of a long vacation, when you decide
To put your house keys back in your pocket,
Take that last morning walk on the beach,
Screw around with the resort’s street signs,
Bump every bumper unparking,
And leave your Lebanese friend behind to tell the truth
Like a novelist daily perfecting his prose to tell a lie.
