A wink,

the smallest wink. What does it indicate? A movement of course; a simple movement that forces one eye to close momentarily. But what does it mean when an eye, winks? One cannot know if the wink is innocent or not. No, there is no one here that can make that judgement since no commentary is forthcoming from the owner of the wink and now the wink in question is gone and the eye in question is as placid as a stream awash in reflected sunlight; the face serene and inclined toward mine; the eyes fixed firmly on my lips as if to say, “I don’t want to miss a word,” which should give me comfort but strangely leaves me discomforted because there is the matter of that wink and a certain serious bemusement at the corner of my listener’s mouth; just a hint of bemusement that threatens to erupt into laughter if not kept strictly in check by its owner which is accomplished by this concentration that is fixed on my lips which of course causes further distress since I am inclined to be self-conscious about the state of my teeth thanks to a childhood of poverty and neglect over which I had no control just as I have no control over that wink whose owner I cannot question without the threat of compromising what little purchase I have in this relationship honed over a period of years and strained by too much familiarity don’t you think?
